The horse and rider are highly abstracted in the Celtic artistic tradition, with the limbs reduced to geometric forms. A pellet appears before the horse in the field. The composition derives ultimately from the reverse type of Macedonian coinage of Philip II, reinterpreted through successive generations of Celtic die-cutting into a near-geometric design. |
