| Beschrijving voorzijde | Diademed bust of Gotarzes I facing left, wearing a distinctive tiara adorned with an eight-rayed star motif. The torque encircling the neck terminates in a sea-horse finial, a characteristic Parthian dynastic emblem. The portrait is rendered in the Hellenistic tradition with fine line work typical of late second-century BC Parthian coinage. The field is unadorned, allowing the regal effigy to dominate the flan. |

Gotarzes I ruled as a sub-king under Mithradates II before asserting greater independence during the political fragmentation that followed Mithradates' declining authority in the 90s BC. His coinage is scarce precisely because his independent reign was short and geographically constrained — likely limited to Babylonia and parts of the Iranian plateau. Sellwood 29.1 represents the earliest classified variety for this ruler, with Shore's attribution confirming the type's rarity in the broader series.
