Gotarzes I ruled as a sub-king under Mithradates II before asserting greater independence during the political fragmentation that followed Mithradates' declining authority in the 90s BC. His coinage is scarce precisely because his independent reign was short and geographically constrained — likely limited to Babylonia and parts of the Iranian plateau. Sellwood 29.1 represents the earliest classified variety for this ruler, with Shore's attribution confirming the type's rarity in the broader series.
