正面描述 Diademed portrait bust of Ariarathes IX Eusebes Philopator facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic tradition with finely engraved wavy hair swept back from the forehead and secured by a royal diadem, the ends of which fall behind the neck. The facial features are sharply defined, displaying a strong profile with a prominent nose and well-modeled chin characteristic of late Cappadocian royal portraiture. The field is plain, with no border of dots visible on this specimen.

附加信息

Ariarathes IX ruled Cappadocia largely as a puppet of Mithridates VI of Pontus — his own father, who had installed him on the throne after engineering the removal of the previous king. The kingdom's autonomy was nominal at best during these years, with Cappadocian coinage functioning as much as a declaration of legitimate succession as anything administratively practical. Rome eventually intervened, recognizing Ariobarzanes I as the rightful ruler around 96 BC and forcing a sequence of contested restorations that left Ariarathes IX's actual reign fragmented and disputed across the numismatic record.
