Ardashir III came to power as a child of seven following the murder of his father Kavad II, himself having reigned only a matter of months after overthrowing Khosrow II. The years 628–630 mark one of the most violent successions in Sasanian history — a dynastic collapse so rapid that at least four rulers claimed the throne within a single decade. Ardashir III was executed by the general Shahrbaraz in 630, after a reign of roughly eighteen months.
The type I/1 classification in Göbl's system places this among the earliest dies of his reign, struck before the administrative machinery of the empire had fully acknowledged his accession across provincial mints.
