Gortyna was one of the dominant poleis of central Crete, and its coinage reflects a civic identity distinct from the northern Cretan mints at Knossos. The references here — Svoronos and SNG Copenhagen — place this drachm within a well-documented but relatively small corpus. Cretan silver of this weight standard follows the Aeginetan tradition, heavier than the Attic norm, consistent with the island's broader commercial orientation toward the Peloponnese and Aegean rather than Attica.
