| Beschrijving voorzijde | A volute krater depicted in high relief, centrally positioned within the field, its globular body tapering to a narrow foot and surmounted by a broad neck with two tall vertical handles rising from the shoulder and curving to attach at the rim. The vessel is rendered with considerable plastic detail, conveying the characteristic form of an Archaic Greek ceramic type. No inscription or legend appears in the field. |

Zakynthos, the Ionian island off the western Peloponnese, struck its own silver coinage during the early fifth century despite being a relatively modest polis by any measure. The island's position on Aegean trade routes running toward Sicily and southern Italy likely drove the practical need for locally recognized currency. HGC 6, 220 is not a common type — surviving examples are few enough that die studies remain incomplete.
