Two male facing heads side by side, rendered in high relief in the distinctive archaic-influenced style characteristic of Istrian coinage. The right-facing head is inverted, its features depicted with pronounced plasticity including almond-shaped eyes, full lips, and flowing hair with a central top-knot or bun. The left head is shown upright, youthful and clean-shaven, adorned with a leafy wreath, its face rendered en face with finely modeled features. Both heads share the field without a border legend, occupying the full flan in a bold and striking composition. This unusual paired-heads motif is a hallmark of Istrian silver coinage and is thought to reference the Dioskouroi or local river deities. |

Istros, a Milesian colony on the western Black Sea coast near the Danube delta, issued this drachm during a period of intense commercial pressure from Macedonian expansion under Philip II and later Alexander. The city's coinage served trade networks reaching deep into Thracian and Scythian territories where Greek silver was actively sought as a medium of exchange rather than a store of wealth — meaning these coins circulated hard.
The AMNG I-I#434 reference places this within Imhoof-Blumer and Pick's foundational Black Sea corpus, still the primary typological framework for Istrian coinage after more than a century.
