The Magnetes were a Thessalian tribal confederation centered on the Pagasitic Gulf, and their autonomous coinage — issued during a narrow window before Roman administrative reorganization progressively strangled Greek civic minting — reflects a community asserting local identity while already operating under Roman shadow. By the 140s BC, Macedonia had been a Roman province for over two decades, and Thessaly's remaining free cities were acutely aware of their diminishing room to maneuver.
