Sybaris was destroyed by the Crotoniates in 510 BC — the city burned, the river Crathis diverted over the ruins. This coin belongs to the refounded city, established by Athenian settlers and surviving Sybarites around 446 BC under the name Sybaris-on-the-Traeis. That second Sybaris lasted fewer than ten years before internal conflict drove the colonists to abandon it entirely and found Thourioi in 444/443 BC, with Hippodamos of Miletos planning the streets and Herodotus among its early settlers. The drachm series ended with the city itself.
