| Obverse description | A scalloped cross occupies the central field, with the cantons decorated alternately: a fleur-de-lis in the first and fourth quarters, and a coronet in the second and third quarters. The circular legend reads HENRI. 4. D. G. FRAN. E. NAVAR. REX., identifying Henri IV as King of the Franks and Navarrese by the grace of God. The lettering is rendered in Latin and runs continuously around the outer border. |

| Reverse description | A crowned shield bearing the combined arms of France and Navarre occupies the central field, the shield presented without flanking supporters. The date appears within the legend, which reads GRATIA. D. SVM. Q. SVM., a biblical inscription translated as 'By the grace of God, I am what I am' (1 Corinthians 15:10). The crown surmounting the shield is rendered in a style typical of late sixteenth-century French royal coinage. |
