Additional information

Henri IV's claim to the French throne in the early 1590s was contested enough that multiple mints operated under uncertain or shifting allegiances during the Wars of Religion. Dieppe, a Huguenot stronghold that had declared for Henri before his 1593 conversion to Catholicism, was one of the few northern mints producing coinage in his name during this precise window. The Latin text variant — as opposed to French — reflects a specific administrative decision at this mint, and the CGKL#182 attribution distinguishes it from closely related issues struck at other loyalist mints in the same years.
