Double Tournois - Henri III Paris mint, 3rd type

Henri III was dead by 1591 — assassinated at Saint-Cloud in August 1589 — yet coins struck in his name continued to be issued by royalist mints for years afterward, as Henri IV's claim remained contested and a transitional coinage in the previous king's type served political as much as monetary purposes. Paris itself had fallen to the Catholic League by 1590, making royalist output from the Paris mint during this period a complicated question of which faction controlled the dies at any given moment.

The third type distinction marks a late administrative revision to the series, introduced as the Wars of Religion ground through their final, exhausting phase.
