| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Henri III facing right, rendered in low relief in the late Renaissance hammered style, occupying the central field within an inner circle. The king is depicted with a ruff collar visible at the truncation. The circumferential Latin legend reads HENRI.III.R.DE.FRAN.ET.POL, identifying the monarch as King of France and Poland, with the mint letter A for Paris appearing at the end of the legend. Henri III was dead by 1591 — assassinated at Saint-Cloud in August 1589 — yet coins struck in his name continued to be issued by royalist mints for years afterward, as Henri IV's claim remained contested and a transitional coinage in the previous king's type served political as much as monetary purposes. Paris itself had fallen to the Catholic League by 1590, making royalist output from the Paris mint during this period a complicated question of which faction controlled the dies at any given moment.
The third type distinction marks a late administrative revision to the series, introduced as the Wars of Religion ground through their final, exhausting phase.
