Charles de Blois struck these during his contested claim to the Duchy of Brittany, a dispute that drew in both the French and English crowns and became one of the bloodiest sub-conflicts of the Hundred Years' War. His rival, Jean de Montfort, held the other half of Breton loyalty — and English backing. The War of Breton Succession ran from 1341 until Charles's death at the Battle of Auray in 1364, meaning this type spans his entire tenure as claimant, never a settled reign.
Charles was later beatified by the Catholic Church in 1904, an unusual fate for a medieval military commander.
