Charles de Blois struck this issue while simultaneously fighting a dynastic war against John de Montfort for control of Brittany — the War of Succession that had already consumed the duchy for over a decade by 1350. His claim rested on his marriage to Joan of Penthièvre and the backing of the French crown, yet he spent much of this period not in a mint hall but in English captivity following his capture at La Roche-Derrien in 1347. Coinage issued under his name during those years was struck by his partisans in his absence.
