Charles inherited the Dauphiné in 1349 through the Act of Humbert II's abdication — a transaction unique in medieval France, whereby an entire principality was sold to the French crown on the condition that the king's eldest son would henceforth bear the title "Dauphin." Charles was the first to hold it, ruling the territory directly until he ascended the throne as Charles V in 1364. The coinage of this brief window therefore occupies a transitional legal moment: issued by a prince who was simultaneously heir apparent and a territorial lord.
