Obverse description Central field displays a fleur-de-lis flanked on either side by an annulet, with a dolphin similarly flanked by two annulets positioned below. The design elements are arranged vertically in the coin's center, reflecting the heraldic emblems of the Dauphiné. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the central motifs, reading the titulature of Charles as eldest son of the King of France. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, as is typical of hammered medieval coinage of this period.
