The surrounding circular Latin legend reads XPS VICIT XPS REGNAT XPS IMPERAT, the traditional Christus vincit acclamation invoking Christ as conqueror, king, and ruler, a formula long employed on French royal coinage. The mint mark V for Villefranche-de-Rouergue appears in the legend. The hammered flan displays the characteristic irregular outline and surface texture of mid-sixteenth-century French billon coinage. |
