Ulugh Muhammad's tenure as khan of the Golden Horde was defined by violent fragmentation — he was expelled from Sarai multiple times and spent years consolidating power from secondary mints like Hajji Tarchan, modern Astrakhan, while rivals held the capital. This dirham belongs to that period of contested authority, struck at a mint that functioned as a lifeline for his legitimacy when the central apparatus was beyond his reach. He would eventually go on to found the Khanate of Kazan in 1438.
The exceptionally low weight reflects the severe debasement afflicting Horde silver issues through the first quarter of the fifteenth century — a slow-motion monetary collapse tracking the dynasty's political one.
