Moulay Abd al-Rahman came to power in 1822 after a succession struggle following the death of his uncle Moulay Slimane, and his early coinage reflects a reign still consolidating authority. The Meknes mint — designated by the Hazrat mint mark — was one of several operating simultaneously under his rule, a deliberate redundancy that made regional monetary control easier but introduced persistent weight and fineness inconsistencies across issues. This particular standard saw revision within a few years as the sultan attempted to stabilize a silver coinage that had been debased and counterfeited extensively during the preceding decades of internal instability.
