Jani Beg came to the throne in 1342 following the murder of his brother Tinibeg, himself only recently installed after killing their father Özbeg Khan. The succession violence was characteristic of the period, yet Jani Beg's reign proved unusually stable — he held the khanate for nearly two decades and expanded Horde territory into Azerbaijan. This piece, struck at Saray al-Jadida ("New Saray"), the administrative capital established on the lower Volga, dates to his accession year itself.
Sagdeeva 216 is among the earlier attributions in his series. The Zeno catalog reference 6784 suggests a specimen with documented provenance in the online corpus of Jochid coinage.
