Dirham 'Dang' - Aziz Shaykh Gulistan mint

The Gulistan mint operated in the lower Volga region and was among the Golden Horde's most productive silver-striking centers during the fourteenth century — until Timur's campaigns effectively ended organized coinage production across the western steppe. By 1366, the Horde was fracturing badly; Aziz Shaykh was one of several competing khans cycling through nominal authority during the so-called "Great Troubles," a succession crisis that saw more than twenty rulers claim the throne between 1359 and 1380. Coins from this reign are correspondingly scarce, the mint's output interrupted by the political instability that would eventually destroy it.
