The anonymous Umayyad dirhams issued from Suq al-Ahwaz reflect the caliphate's push to standardize coinage following Abd al-Malik's sweeping monetary reform of 696–698 AD, which abolished the earlier Arab-Sasanian types and replaced them with purely epigraphic silver. Suq al-Ahwaz — a major commercial hub in Khuzestan, the former heartland of Sasanian economic activity — was among the provincial mints pressed into service to meet demand across the eastern provinces. The "anonymous" attribution here signals the absence of a governor's name, placing this piece in the earlier phase of the reformed coinage before mint and date recording became consistent practice.
