| Obverse description | Central field bears the Shahada in three horizontal lines of Kufic Arabic script arranged within a plain inner circle: 'There is no god but God alone, He has no associate.' A concentric outer legend band, separated by two linear borders, carries the mint and date formula: 'In the name of God, this dirham was struck at Suq al-Ahwaz in the year [date].' A further inner marginal band contains the Quranic verse of mission (Quran 9:33). The script is angular early Kufic, characteristic of Umayyad monetary reform dirhams, with no figural imagery. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as typical of hammered silver coinage of this period. |
