The outer marginal legend bears the Quranic verse from Sura al-Tawba (9:33), affirming the divine mission of the Prophet, rendered in the angular Kufic script characteristic of early Abbasid dirhams. The layout adheres strictly to the standard Abbasid epigraphic reverse type established by the monetary reform of Abd al-Malik, with no pictorial or figural imagery. The letterforms throughout are flat and unmodelled, consistent with provincial mint production under the authority of the Abbasid central administration. |
