Al-Nāṣir Muhammad ibn Qalawun held the Mamluk sultanate across three separate reigns — deposed twice, first in 1294 and again in 1309 — before his third and final reign ran an uninterrupted 31 years until his death. The dirhams struck across these reigns reflect shifting political control: issues from his second reign are notably rare, as actual power rested with the amir Baybars al-Jāshankīr, who had his own name struck on coinage. The range of Balog reference numbers assigned to this type reflects the substantial die and mint variation accumulated across those decades of intermittent rule.
