Al-Mansur's dirham coinage represents the first major standardization of Abbasid silver after the dynasty's violent seizure of power from the Umayyads in 750. The weight standard of roughly 2.97g introduced under his reign was a deliberate continuation of the late Umayyad reformed dirham — a pragmatic choice for a regime that needed monetary credibility faster than it needed symbolic rupture.
Al-Mansur founded Baghdad in 762, and the city's mint quickly became the most productive in the caliphate. Album's 213.2 designation distinguishes specific die arrangements within a large and varied series; collectors should treat mint attribution with caution, as several provincial mints struck nearly identical types simultaneously.
