The Shaddadids were a Kurdish dynasty who carved out control of Ganja and Dvin during the fragmentation of Abbasid authority in the southern Caucasus. Al-Fadl I's coinage from this period is notable less for volume than for geographic reach — Ganja sat at a crossroads of Armenian, Georgian, and Islamic commercial networks, and his dirhams circulated well beyond the territory he actually controlled. The reference numbers here align with a type struck during his consolidation of Ganja following internecine conflict with his own relatives over succession.
