Abu'l-Saraya al-Shaybani led one of the most serious Alid uprisings against Abbasid authority, launching his rebellion in 815 from Kufa in the name of the Zaydi Shia cause. He controlled much of Iraq and parts of the Hijaz for several months before his defeat and execution later that year. The striking of dirhams was an explicit political act — coinage in the Islamic world functioned as a declaration of legitimate sovereignty, and issuing in his own name directly challenged al-Ma'mun's authority during a period when the Abbasid caliphate was itself fractured by civil war.
The rebellion collapsed within a year, making this among the shortest-lived coin-issuing authorities in Abbasid-era Iraq.
