Obverse description Typical Abbasid-style hammered silver dirham struck in the name of the Zaydi rebel leader Abu'l-Saraya al-Shaybani. The central field bears three horizontal lines of Arabic Kufic legend affirming the shahada: 'There is no god but God alone, without partner; Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' The field is enclosed within a single inner circle. The marginal legend, running within an outer circular band, records the mint name and date: struck at Kufa in the year 199 AH (815 CE). The overall fabric is characteristic of early Abbasid provincial coinage, with a slightly irregular flan and flat, unadorned fields.
