Obverse description Central field contains three lines of Arabic Kufic inscription reading 'There is no deity except God alone; He has no equal.' The marginal legend, running along the inner border, records the mint and regnal year in Arabic: 'In the name of God, this Dirham was struck in al-Andalus in the year three hundred and thirty.' The entire design is executed in angular Kufic script typical of Andalusian coinage of the early Caliphal period, with no figural imagery, conforming strictly to Islamic aniconic tradition. The field is flat and unadorned save for the inscriptions, and the coin exhibits the slightly irregular flan characteristic of hammered silver production.
