Obverse description Forepart (protome) of a horse prancing to the left, rendered in high relief with the forelegs raised. A retrograde letter B (beta) appears on the body of the horse, likely serving as a control mark or mint symbol. The Greek letters ΣΠΑ, referencing the issuer Sparadokos, appear in the field. The whole design is set within a beaded border, characteristic of Thracian coinage of the fifth century BC.

Additional information

Sparadokos ruled the Odrysian kingdom as a subordinate king under his brother Sitalces, whose realm at its height stretched from the Aegean coast deep into Thrace — the largest territorial power in the Balkans during the fifth century BC. These small silver fractions circulated within a kingdom that Greek historians acknowledged as a significant political force yet left frustratingly underdocumented in comparison to its Aegean neighbors. The consistent absence of catalog numbers across every major reference work — Peykov, Moushmov, Dobruski — signals a piece that the standard corpora have not formally absorbed.
