This mill-sail or windmill incuse pattern is characteristic of archaic coinage from the Thraco-Macedonian region, serving as the mechanical countermark of the hammer blow used to strike the flan. The square is deeply recessed into the flat reverse field, with sharp, well-defined borders, and no inscription or additional device is present. |
