The bovine features are rendered with compact, stylised relief, the curving neck and muzzle clearly articulated within the confined flan. The granulated or pelleted inner border frames the central device and serves as a decorative and functional boundary. No inscription is present. This reverse type is a hallmark of archaic and early Classical Samian coinage. |

Samos in this period was navigating the aftermath of the Ionian Revolt and the shifting pressures of Athenian imperial expansion through the Delian League. The island maintained enough autonomous monetary output to issue fractional silver independently, though its relationship with Athens grew increasingly coercive through the mid-fifth century — culminating in the Athenian suppression of the Samian revolt of 440–439 BC, which effectively ended this phase of independent Samian coinage.
