Obverse description Central shield of Portugal flanked by a sword on each side, rendered in the rudimentary style characteristic of early medieval Iberian hammered coinage. The shield is depicted in low relief against a flat field, with irregular flan surfaces typical of the period. A circular legend surrounds the central device, reading a variation of PORTVGAL, with letterforms subject to considerable die-to-die variation. The overall design reflects the nascent heraldic vocabulary of the early Portuguese monarchy under Sancho I.
