Teobaldo II inherited the Navarrese throne at age fourteen and spent much of his reign navigating the suffocating influence of Castile and France — his mother Blanche had effectively mortgaged royal authority to Louis IX for years before his accession. The billon dinero issued under his name reflects a kingdom perpetually short of silver, relying on debased coinage to meet fiscal obligations it could not otherwise service.
He died in Trapani in 1270, returning from Louis IX's disastrous Eighth Crusade — a campaign that killed both men within weeks of each other.
