Enrique III earned the epithet "el Doliente" — the Sufferer — for the chronic illness that plagued his entire reign, yet he governed with unexpected political force, curbing the power of the great noble houses that had dominated during his minority. The Seville mint was among the most active of his reign, supplying the low-denomination billon coinage that underpinned everyday commerce in Andalusia. Enrique died in 1406 at twenty-seven, leaving a two-year-old heir and a regency council that would govern Castile for the next fourteen years.
