Obverse description Facing bust of King Alfonso VIII shown in three-quarter view turned to the left, rendered in a stylised Romanesque manner typical of Castilian medieval coinage. The royal figure is depicted with a diademed or crownlet head, short wavy hair visible at the sides, and a draped bust with a simple collar or neckline visible below. The effigy is contained within a plain inner circle, surrounded by the retrograde or partially legible Latin legend in the outer field. The overall execution is characteristic of the hammered billon dineros of the Toledo mint, with an irregular flan and bold, if somewhat crude, die work.
