Alfonso VIII's dineros were struck in the wake of the catastrophic defeat at Alarcos (1195), when Castile's treasury was under severe strain and alliances with León and Navarre had collapsed. The billon composition reflects deliberate debasement — a fiscal response to war costs, not a technical limitation. By 1212, Alfonso would reverse Castile's fortunes entirely at Las Navas de Tolosa, one of the decisive engagements of the Reconquista, but the coins of this decade were minted in a kingdom that had genuinely feared for its survival.
