Obverse description Central field depicts a stylized three-towered castle with crenellated battlements, each tower surmounted by a finial; the central tower bears a Latin cross above it, flanked by a six-pointed star to the upper left and upper right of the cross. Mint mark letters appear to the left and right of the central tower. The peripheral legend in Latin runs along the lower portion of the coin within a beaded border. The design is characteristic of the Castilian dinero coinage of Alfonso VIII, rendered in the bold, abbreviated style typical of hammered billon issues of the early 13th century.
