| Obverse description | Central device depicting a stylised triple-towered castle rendered in high relief, its battlements and gate clearly articulated, set within a tressure of eight Gothic arches terminating in trefoil ornaments. A cross pattée or floral finial crowns the uppermost arch at twelve o'clock. The circular Latin legend MONETA CASTELLE runs along the periphery between the tressure and the beaded border. The overall design is executed in the robust, somewhat crude hammered style characteristic of Alfonsine billon issues. |

| Reverse description | A passant lion in high relief occupies the centre of the coin, facing right, its mane rendered with curling foliage-like detail, set within a tressure of eight Gothic arches adorned with trefoil finials and a cross ornament at the apex. The peripheral Latin legend ET LEGIONIS encircles the design between the tressure and an outer beaded border. The hammered flan is slightly irregular and exhibits characteristic medieval die wear, consistent with the billon coinage of Alfonso X. |
