Stefan Dušan seized the Serbian throne in 1331 by deposing — and likely ordering the murder of — his own father, Stefan Uroš III, who died in captivity at Zvečan shortly after the coup. The early coinage of his reign, covering the period before his 1346 proclamation as Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks, reflects a kingdom still consolidating rather than one already dominant. Once he elevated Serbia to an empire, the royal titulature on the coinage changed accordingly, making this pre-imperial dinar series the shorter-issued of his two primary silver types.
Dobričić references 6.1.1 and 6.1.7 distinguish die variants within the series — differences primarily in the form of the inscription rather than structural design changes.
