| Obverse description | The obverse is entirely epigraphic, bearing multiple horizontal lines of bold Naskhi Arabic script filling the central field. The legends proclaim the religious formula and the name and titles of the reigning Mamluk sultan, Shihab al-Din Ahmad I. The script is deeply struck in high relief, with characteristic Mamluk calligraphic style featuring sweeping ascenders and interlocking letterforms. The flat, irregular flan is typical of hammered Mamluk gold coinage of the mid-fourteenth century. No figurative imagery is present, in accordance with Islamic numismatic convention. |
