Beschrijving voorzijde Crowned and ornamented ruler seated on horseback, advancing to the right, depicted in the hieratic style characteristic of the Hindu Shahi coinage tradition. The king wears an elaborate headdress and appears richly attired, holding what appears to be a lance or staff in the left hand. The horse is rendered in a highly stylized, almost schematic manner typical of the degenerate late Shahi coinage and its contemporary imitations. The overall relief is bold but somewhat crude in execution, consistent with a contemporary counterfeit of a Samanta Deva-type dinar.

Beschrijving keerzijde A recumbent humped bull (Nandi) facing left occupies the lower portion of the field, rendered in a stylized manner with schematic musculature. Above the bull, a Nagari legend in degenerate script reads 'Sri Samanta Deva', identifying the issuing authority. A dotted border runs along the upper periphery of the flan. The reverse design follows the established iconographic convention of the Hindu Shahi bull-and-legend type, though the execution is coarser than official issues, consistent with a contemporary imitative or counterfeit striking.

Aanvullende informatie

The Hindu Shahis produced bull-and-horseman dinars in such quantities over such a long period that precise attribution remains genuinely contested — scholars still argue over which rulers issued which types, and the Samanta Deva attribution itself carries uncertainty. That commercial desirability, combined with a type whose stylistic variation provides natural cover, made these coins targets for modern fabrication. Gold forgeries of this series circulate with some frequency in the trade.
