The Kidarites emerged as the Kushano-Sasanian administration collapsed under pressure from their own eastward advance, and Kidara I is generally credited as the dynasty's founder or consolidator — the historical record is thin enough that scholars still argue both points. These dinars imitate the late Kushan gold coinage so closely that attribution long remained confused, and many pieces sat misidentified in older collections under Kushan kings they were never struck by.
The Gandhara mint attribution distinguishes this issue from related Bactrian-region strikes, a separation made possible largely through die studies and find-spot analysis rather than explicit mint marks.
