Hormizd I ruled for under two years following the death of Shapur I, and the brevity of his reign makes any coinage attributable to him exceptionally scarce. The Indo-Sasanian series presents particular attribution difficulties — Göbl, Herzfeld, and subsequent scholars have debated which struck pieces belong to Hormizd I versus transitional issues of Shapur's final years, meaning the Herzfeld #21 reference anchors this attribution to a classification that not all specialists accept without reservation.
