The central field bears the Islamic profession of faith reading 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' A marginal legend encircling the field records the mint name and the date of striking in words, identifying the place of issue as al-Qahira (Cairo) and the year as 741 AH. The calligraphy is vigorous and deeply struck in the characteristic Mamluk epigraphic tradition. |
