| Reverse description | The reverse features a multi-line central field inscription in Kufic Arabic script giving the mint formula, the Hijri year of issue, and the name and title of the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid: 'In the name of God, this dinar was struck in the year [AH], by command of Abdullah Harun, Commander of the Faithful.' A circular marginal legend in Kufic script borders the central text, separated by a beaded or plain inner ring. The reverse, like the obverse, is entirely epigraphic in design, with no decorative motifs, reflecting the austere and orthodox aesthetic of Abbasid gold coinage. The lettering is bold and well-formed, characteristic of the high-quality dies used during the reign of Harun al-Rashid. |
