Abu Faris 'Abd Allah al-Wathiq ruled as a client sultan under Ottoman pressure during one of the most fractured periods in Sa'adian history, when the dynasty had effectively split into competing branches controlling Marrakesh and Fez simultaneously. His reign lasted no more than four years before he was deposed by his own family. Gold issues from the Marrakesh branch during this period are genuinely scarce — the political instability disrupted mint continuity, and surviving examples suggest limited production runs rather than sustained coinage.
